John 3:1–21 · Nicodemus & Jesus
Big Idea: Eternal life is available to anyone—not by earning, but by being born from above (born again) through faith in Jesus.
Scripture
Read: John 3:1–21
What happened
- Nicodemus comes at night: A respected Pharisee and ruler, confident in rule-keeping, meets Jesus.
- Jesus’ shocking word: “Unless one is born again/from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Religious résumé isn’t enough.
- Born of water & Spirit: We need cleansing and new life only God can give—like wind: unseen, but evident.
- The lifted Son: Just as Moses lifted the serpent, the Son of Man must be lifted up so that whoever believes has eternal life.
- God’s heart: “For God so loved the world…”—not to condemn, but to save all who believe in His Son.
Why it matters
- No one is “good enough,” no one is “too far gone.” Nicodemus shows the first; John 4 will show the second. All need new birth.
- New birth produces evidence. You can’t control the Spirit, but you can see His work—new loves, new priorities, new obedience.
- Faith looks and lives. Look to the lifted Christ and live; then begin living as a citizen of His kingdom now.
Reflect
- Have I been relying on my background, morals, or effort—or have I been born from above by trusting Jesus?
- Where do I see the Spirit’s “wind” changing my desires, habits, and relationships?
- Who in my life still thinks they’re “neutral”? (There is no neutral—invite them to look to Jesus.)
Respond
- Believe: Tell Jesus, “I trust You—crucified and risen for me.” Ask Him to make you new by His Spirit.
- Rejoice: Thank God daily that you’ve moved from “nope” to the kingdom of His Son.
- Share: Be generous with your words—invite one person this week to hear about Jesus (church, Lifegroup, coffee).
