Don’t Drift: Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

September 20, 2025

Scripture: Hebrews 2:1–18

Big idea: Jesus is greater—so pay close attention, don’t drift, and rely on Him.

Don’t Drift—Fix Your Focus

“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” (Hebrews 2:1)

Hebrews warns that spiritual drift is real. It’s rarely dramatic; it’s usually slow and subtle. The antidote? Give closer attention to the gospel—time in the Word and prayer—so your heart stays anchored to Jesus.

Two honest questions

  • Worship: Am I “wow” about Jesus right now or more “whatever”?
  • Reliance: Day to day, am I relying on Him or defaulting to me?

Attested and Reliable

The message about Jesus is rock solid. It was:

  • Declared by the Lord Jesus Himself,
  • Confirmed by eyewitnesses who heard, saw, and touched Him,
  • Validated by God through signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Spirit (Hebrews 2:3–4).

Fulfillment: Psalm 8 Finds Its Center in Jesus

“…we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor…” (Hebrews 2:9)

Hebrews shows Psalm 8 fulfilled in Christ: He came down (incarnation), was lifted up (resurrection & exaltation), and will at last be seen to rule over all things. Legally, all authority already belongs to Jesus (Matthew 28:18); visibly, we’re in the “already/not yet.” Until He returns, we trust Him and get to work with Him.

Trust—and do what you can

  • Trust: Pray for what’s not yet under His visible rule—in you and around you.
  • Act: Do the good you can do right now (love your neighbor, serve the vulnerable, share the gospel).

Founder, Brother, High Priest

“It was fitting… in bringing many sons to glory, [to] make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.” (Hebrews 2:10)

“Perfect” here means fully qualified to save. By suffering and dying, Jesus:

  • Brings many sons and daughters to glory (your future is hope, not wrath),
  • Destroys the one who has the power of death—the devil (v. 14),
  • Delivers us from the fear of death (v. 15),
  • Makes propitiation for our sins—God’s wrath is removed from those in Christ (v. 17),
  • And as our merciful, faithful High Priest, He helps us when we’re tempted (v. 18).

How to Respond This Week

  1. Pay closer attention. Add 5 extra minutes a day in the Word and prayer. Start with Hebrews 2.
  2. Ask Jesus to realign your loves. Move from “whatever/me” toward “wow/Him.”
  3. Do one concrete good. Meet a real need you see; be part of His “already” while you wait for the “not yet.”
  4. Tell someone what you’re learning. Share one Hebrews 2 takeaway with a friend this week.
