Jesus Is Better — Hebrews 1

September 14, 2025

Big Idea: Jesus. How are you responding to Him—today?

We kicked off a 13-week journey through the New Testament letter to the Hebrews. In Chapter 1, the author lifts up the greatness of Jesus—no commands, just a breathtaking vision of the Son that calls for our response.

Scripture Reading

Read: Hebrews 1:1–14

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” (Heb 1:1–4)

Who Wrote Hebrews?

Short answer: we don’t know. The letter was received very early into the New Testament canon because of its clear apostolic teaching and widespread use in the churches. (For more background, see our recent post on why Hebrews belongs in the Bible.)

Scripture Memory Bookmarks

We handed out memory bookmarks—a practical way to hide God’s Word in your heart. Try taping the “code” side where you’ll see it daily (bathroom mirror, steering wheel, etc.). Over the next seven weeks, we’ll share seven verses from Hebrews. If you’re new to memorization, start with one; if you’re ready, take on all seven! Remember: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matt 4:4)

Nine Things Hebrews 1 Says About Jesus (vv. 1–4)

  1. God’s final Word: In these last days, God has spoken by His Son (Heb 1:1–2).
  2. God’s Son & Heir: Appointed the heir of all things (v. 2).
  3. Creator: Through whom God created the world (v. 2).
  4. Radiance of God’s glory (v. 3).
  5. Exact imprint of His nature (v. 3).
  6. Sustainer: Upholds all things by the word of His power (v. 3).
  7. Suffering Savior: Made purification for sins (v. 3).
  8. Exalted King: Sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high (v. 3).
  9. Greater than angels (v. 4).

Old Testament Proof (vv. 5–14): Jesus > Angels

The author strings together Scripture to show the Son’s supremacy:

Conclusion: angels are “ministering spirits” serving those who will inherit salvation (Heb 1:14)—glorious, yes, but not the Son.

Reflect: How Are You Responding to Jesus?

Use these quick, honest scales to locate your heart today:

  • Worship (0–10): “Whatever…” (0) ⟶ “Wow!” (10)
  • Rely (0–10): Me (0) ⟶ Him (10)

Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of His nature; He upholds all things and has made purification for sins. Where are you on those scales right now?

Respond

  1. Worship: Move from “whatever” to “wow.” Set aside time this week to adore Christ (try Col 1:15–20 or Rev 5).
  2. Rely: Trust His providence today (He upholds everything, Heb 1:3) and His purification for your sins (Heb 9:11–14; 10:10–14).
  3. Invite: As wonder and reliance grow, invite a friend to consider Jesus—share what He’s done, and bring them next Sunday.

Next Steps

  • Memorize this week’s Hebrews verse using your bookmark.
  • Join a Life Group as they launch—grow in worship and reliance together.
  • Read Hebrews 2 in preparation for next Sunday.

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken…” (Heb 12:28–29)
