When the Wine Runs Out: Jesus Transforms the Ordinary

September 22, 2024

John 2:1–12 · Wedding at Cana

Big Idea: When our best plans hit empty, Jesus doesn’t just make things “okay”—He makes them new. He invites us to trust Him, obey Him, and participate in what He’s doing.

Scripture

Read: John 2:1–12

What happened

  • A crisis at a wedding: The wine runs out—public shame for the couple in an honor/shame culture.
  • Mary goes to Jesus: “They have no wine.” Faith looks to Jesus first.
  • Jesus’ reply: “My hour has not yet come.” He will act, but on His terms and timing.
  • Servants obey: They fill six stone jars (20–30 gallons each) to the brim—before any miracle is visible.
  • Transformation: Water becomes excellent wine. The master of the feast marvels; the couple’s joy and honor are restored.
  • Purpose of the sign: Jesus “manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him” (v. 11).

Why it matters

  • Go to Jesus first. Mary doesn’t scramble for human fixes; she brings the need to Jesus.
  • Obey before you see. The servants do the ordinary thing (carry water) and God does the impossible (create wine).
  • Jesus upgrades our emptiness. He doesn’t just refill; He transforms—quality and joy overflow.
  • He includes us. God delights to involve ordinary people in His extraordinary work.

Reflect

  • Where am I “out of wine” right now—plans failing, resources thin, hope low?
  • What simple act of obedience is Jesus asking me to do before I see any change?
  • Who’s one person I can serve this week so they taste Jesus’ better joy?

Respond

  1. Pray first: Name your need to Jesus. “Lord, I’m out of ______. I trust You.”
  2. Fill the jars: Take the ordinary step you know to do—confess, reconcile, show up, serve, invite.
  3. Tell the story: Share how Jesus has transformed you—point someone to Him this week.
