Living Faithfully in Exile

LIVING FAITHFULLY IN EXILE: DANIEL 1

The Big Idea

We are called to live in our world without letting culture reshape our faith. Are you standing firm?

Picking up right where our 1 & 2 Kings series left off—at the fall of Judah in 605 BC—we enter the book of Daniel to explore what it looks like for God’s people to faithfully navigate life as exiles in a culture that doesn’t share their values.

Key Takeaways from Daniel 1

In this opening chapter, we discover four essential truths for remaining faithful in a changing world:

  • God is Active in the Background — Even when circumstances feel chaotic or discouraging, God remains completely sovereign. Scripture notes that “the Lord gave” Jerusalem into Nebuchadnezzar’s hand, demonstrating that God directs history, grants favor, and equips His people through every trial.
  • Engage, Don’t Conform — Daniel and his friends were pressured to adopt Babylon’s literature, language, and names, yet they maintained their true identity in God. We are called to engage and serve our community without letting the spirit of the age compromise our beliefs.
  • Hardship with a Purpose — As Jeremiah 29 reminds us, God intentionally places His people in foreign territory not to withdraw, but to seek the welfare of their city and allow His mercy to reach beyond them.
  • Our Ultimate Hope — Earthly kingdoms rise and fall, but God’s kingdom endures. Daniel’s story points forward to Jesus, who came into exile for us, remained fully obedient, and guarantees our ultimate victory.

This Week’s Challenge

God has intentionally placed each of us in Mount Vernon—in our specific workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods—for a divine purpose.

Action Step: Identify one person in your life who needs to hear the hope of Jesus. Take a bold step this week to initiate a conversation, share your story, or simply begin building a meaningful relationship with them.

Invite a friend and we’ll see you Sunday!

Discussion Questions

  1. Warm-Up: What is one area of modern culture where you feel the most pressure to conform?
  2. Read Daniel 1:1–7: Daniel and his friends were renamed, re-educated, and immersed in Babylonian culture. How do we engage with culture without adopting its worldview or losing our identity in Christ?
  3. Read Daniel 1:8–16: Daniel drew a clear line regarding the royal food and wine. How do we discern when to adapt to culture and when to draw a firm line?
  4. Read Jeremiah 29:4–7: How does viewing our present location as an intentional “exile with a purpose” change the way we view our workplaces, neighborhoods, and community involvement?
  5. Application: Looking back at this week’s action step, who is one person God has placed in your sphere of influence, and how can this group pray for you as you reach out to them this week?
