Jesus Gives Better Promises

Big Idea: Jesus gives us better promises. He invites us to trust Him fully—to stop relying on “me” and start relying on “He.”

Scripture Reading

Read: Hebrews 8 : 1–13

“But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant He mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.” — Hebrews 8 : 6 (ESV)

Jesus, Our Better High Priest

The author of Hebrews turns our eyes upward. Jesus isn’t serving in an earthly tabernacle or temple made by human hands—He ministers in the true heavenly temple, the one God Himself established. Every priest in the Old Testament offered sacrifices day after day. But Jesus, the perfect Son of God, offered Himself once for all. His atoning work is finished, and His interceding work continues forever.

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became both our perfect sacrifice and our eternal High Priest. He’s the one who makes it possible for people like us to draw near to God.

Better Promises

The writer quotes Jeremiah 31 : 31–34, where God promised a new covenant—something far better than the law written on stone tablets. In that passage, God says four times, “I will.”

  • I will make a new covenant with My people.
  • I will write My laws on their minds and hearts.
  • I will be their God, and they will be My people.
  • I will remember their sins no more.

God fulfills every one of those promises in Jesus. He’s not interested in outward compliance but inward transformation. His Spirit writes the truth on our hearts so that what God wants and what we want increasingly become the same thing.

Patience and “All In” Faith

Jeremiah spoke these words more than 500 years before Jesus came. God’s people had to wait centuries to see the promise fulfilled. Yet God was faithful. The same God who keeps His covenant across generations can be trusted with your waiting and your life right now.

And if Jesus truly gives better promises, then the only right response is to be all in on Him. Not halfway, not conditional—fully committed to trusting, obeying, and loving the One who has written His grace on your heart.

Reflect

  • Faith: Where’s your trust right now—on “me” or on “He”? What might need to change this week?
  • Promise: Which of the “I will” statements from Jeremiah 31 means the most to you today?
  • Patience: Where do you need to remember that God’s timing is perfect, even when His fulfillment seems slow?

Respond

  • Worship: Thank Jesus for being both your sacrifice and your High Priest. Praise Him for the better covenant He’s given you.
  • Trust: Hand over one area of your life where you’ve been relying on yourself. Ask the Spirit to help you rely on Christ instead.
  • Share: Encourage someone this week with the truth that Jesus offers better promises—ones that can never fail.
