Christ, Our High Priest

Hebrews 4:14–5:10 · Lifegroup Discussion Guide + Transcript

The Greatness of Jesus

Summary

Jesus is our Great High Priest: the Son of God who sympathizes with our weakness, the sinless Savior who suffered, and the priest appointed forever after the order of Melchizedek. Because of Him, we hold fast our confession and draw near to the throne of grace for mercy and help.

Lifegroup Discussion Guide

Icebreaker

  • Share a time you needed help “in the moment.” How did God meet you with mercy or grace?

Scripture

Read: Hebrews 4:14–5:10

Big Idea

In Christ we have a sympathetic, sinless, divinely-appointed High Priest forever. Therefore: hold fast and draw near.

Key Points

  • Great High Priest (4:14): Jesus, the Son of God, ascended through the heavens—so we hold fast our confession.
  • Sympathetic & sinless (4:15–16): He understands our weakness, yet never sinned. Come with confidence to the throne of grace for mercy and help.
  • Appointed priesthood (5:1–4): Priests are called by God and deal gently; old‑covenant priests offered for their own sins.
  • Priest forever (5:5–6): The Father appoints the Son—“You are my Son… You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
  • Suffering & salvation (5:7–10): Jesus prayed with “loud cries and tears,” learned obedience through suffering, and became the source of eternal salvation.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it practically mean for you to “hold fast” your confession this week?
  2. Where do you need to “draw near” for mercy and grace right now?
  3. How does knowing Jesus sympathizes change the way you pray?
  4. Why is it important that Jesus was appointed High Priest (not self‑appointed)?
  5. How does Jesus’ suffering and obedience shape your approach to trials?

Practice This Week

  • Draw Near Daily: Take 10 unhurried minutes each day to come to the throne of grace (Heb 4:16).
  • Hold Fast Together: Share one verse or prayer with someone in your Lifegroup every day.
  • Next Step: If you’ve trusted Jesus but haven’t been baptized, take that step.

Hold Fast & Draw Near — Hebrews 4:14–5:10
Guest Speaker: Pastor Jeff

Good morning, Lifepoint Church. Thank you for the privilege of opening God’s Word. Please pray for me as I preach—and for our church family back home. We’re in Hebrews 4:14 through 5:10 as part of “The Greatness of Jesus.”

Hebrews 4:14 — Our Great High Priest

“Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus, the Son of God—let us hold fast our confession.” Jesus came, lived sinlessly, died, rose, and ascended. He is Savior and Son of God. Because this is true, believers are to hold fast—keep identifying with Jesus and speaking of Him openly and consistently.

Hebrews 4:15–16 — Sympathy, Sinlessness, and Access

We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness; He was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. He truly understands hunger, fatigue, testing, and pressure—without ever sinning. Therefore, we are invited to approach the throne of grace with confidence—reverent assurance—to receive mercy (not getting the judgment we deserve) and grace (receiving the help we don’t deserve) in time of need. We are always in need; so we always pray.

Hebrews 5:1–4 — What Priests Do (and Don’t)

Under the old covenant, high priests were chosen from among men to represent the people before God, offering gifts and sacrifices for sins. They dealt gently with the ignorant and wandering because they themselves were weak and had to offer for their own sins. Crucially, no one takes this honor for himself; priests are called by God.

Hebrews 5:5–6 — Appointed Forever

Likewise, Christ did not exalt Himself to be high priest. The Father declared, “You are my Son,” and also, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” Unlike Aaron’s line, Jesus’ priesthood is unique and eternal.

Hebrews 5:7–10 — Suffering, Obedience, and Eternal Salvation

In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Though He is the Son, He “learned obedience” through suffering—He grew, as true man, by perfectly doing the Father’s will. Having completed His mission, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who trust and obey, being designated by God a high priest forever.

Application

  • Hold Fast: Keep confessing Christ—in public and in private. Don’t drift or hide your allegiance.
  • Draw Near: Come quickly and often to the throne of grace. There is mercy for your failures and grace for your need.
  • Rest Assured: Your salvation is anchored in Jesus’ finished work. He is the priest you need—forever.

Friend, if you’ve never trusted Jesus, come to Him today. If you do belong to Him, take heart: your Great High Priest loves you, understands you, and welcomes you close.
