In Daniel Chapter 5, King Belshazar throws a feast, desecrates the gold and silver vessels taken from God’s temple, and praises idols. Suddenly, a miraculous human hand appears and writes a message on the palace wall, signaling Belshazar’s downfall. Through this narrative, Pastor Zay challenges us to evaluate whether we live under the ultimate authority of God’s Word or attempt to live over it by prioritizing our own opinions, culture, or desires.

1. Pride Refuses to Recognize God’s Authority (vv. 1–4)
   Belshazar’s defiance wasn’t just a party; it was taking what belonged to God for his own glory. Pride doesn’t always say “I don’t believe in God”—often it looks like placing ourselves as the ultimate authority over what God has spoken.
2. God Has the Authority to Confront and Convict Us (vv. 5–16)
   The terrifying handwriting on the wall brought the arrogant king to his knees. God is sovereign and holds total authority to confront sin in our lives.

   God’s message was fulfilled that very night as Belshazar lost his kingdom and his life. Ignoring or rejecting God’s Word does not make it any less true; God always defines reality.

While Belshazar exalted himself and was brought low, Jesus—who is truly God—humbled Himself by going to the cross to take the penalty our sins deserved. Our response should not simply stem from fear of judgment, but from humble gratitude toward the God who loved us enough to send His Son.
