Sin Has Consequences
1 Kings 12–14
Following Solomon’s death, Israel experiences one of the most tragic turning points in its history.
Rehoboam rejects wise counsel and divides the kingdom. Jeroboam establishes false worship and leads God’s people into idolatry. Even after repeated warnings from God, neither king turns from his sin.
The central truth of these chapters is clear:
Sin has consequences.
Yet these chapters also point us toward hope. The answer to our sin problem is not trying harder or becoming wiser than Solomon. The answer is Jesus Christ.
Main Question
Are you willing to turn and trust?
The Christian life is marked by continually turning from sin and trusting Jesus.
Rehoboam: Harshness Divides
Rehoboam rejected wisdom and chose harshness. The result was a divided kingdom.
Application: In a fallen world, things that belong together often fall apart. We should pursue humility, wisdom, and kindness in our relationships.
Jeroboam: Idolatry Spreads
Jeroboam chose political security over obedience to God and led Israel into idolatry.
Application: Every generation must resist the temptation to worship something other than Jesus.
The Man of God: Obey God’s Word
A prophet disobeyed a direct command from God after listening to a deceptive voice.
Application: We must obey what God has clearly said, even when others encourage compromise.
Looking to Jesus
These chapters show us our need for a better King.
Where Rehoboam failed, Jesus rules with perfect wisdom.
Where Jeroboam led people into idolatry, Jesus leads people into true worship.
Where every earthly king falls short, Jesus reigns forever.
Sin has consequences, but Jesus came to save sinners.
The question remains:
Are you willing to turn and trust?
