Faithful God for the Long Journey

Faithful God for the Long Journey

Text: 1 Kings 19

After calling down fire from heaven and witnessing one of the greatest victories in Israel’s history, Elijah receives a death threat from Queen Jezebel and runs for his life.

In 1 Kings 19, we follow Elijah from Mount Carmel to Beersheba and ultimately to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. Along the way, we encounter a weary, discouraged prophet who believes he is alone and wants to die.

Yet God does not abandon him.

God meets Elijah with:

  • Rest
  • Food and water
  • His presence
  • His Word
  • Renewed purpose

Discouragement Is Part of the Journey

Many believers assume that if they are walking closely with God, they should never struggle with fear, exhaustion, disappointment, or despair.

Elijah’s story tells a different story.

One of the godliest men in Scripture experienced profound discouragement.

When we walk through seasons of discouragement, we must resist some common temptations:

  • Do not isolate. You have people who love you and want to care for you. Let them.
  • Do not become passive. Get up and move. Walk, run, garden, bale hay, or do something healthy and life-giving.
  • Do not distance yourself from God. Discouragement can tempt us to blame God or pull away from Him in anger. Don’t run from the One who loves you.

Two Big Truths from the Passage

  • God loves His people. He cared for Elijah gently and personally in his weakness.
  • God rules over all nations and people. Even when Elijah thought everything was falling apart, God was still directing the future of Israel, Syria, and the surrounding nations.

The Hope of Jesus

Elijah’s forty-day journey to the mountain of God points beyond itself.

Every Christian is on a journey toward the true mountain of God.

Because of our sin, we deserve to meet the God of fire and judgment. But because Jesus bore God’s judgment in our place, those who belong to Him will not hear condemnation when their journey ends.

Through Christ, we will hear the voice of our Savior saying:

“Welcome home.”

Big Idea: Discouragement is part of the journey, but the God who loves His people and rules the nations will faithfully sustain us until the day Jesus welcomes us home.

Gospel Connection

Elijah’s forty-day journey to the mountain of God points beyond itself to a greater reality.

Every believer is on a journey toward the true mountain of God—the heavenly Zion where God will dwell with His people forever.

On our own, we deserve to stand before the holy God of fire and judgment. Like every sinner, we deserve condemnation for our rebellion against Him.

But Jesus Christ came to bear that judgment in our place. At the cross, He endured the wrath we deserved so that all who trust in Him might receive forgiveness, grace, and eternal life.

Because of Jesus, believers do not need to fear the end of the journey. When we finally arrive in God’s presence, we will not hear condemnation.

Instead, through Christ, we will hear the welcome of our Savior:

“Welcome home.”
