But right in the middle of all that darkness, we drew our attention to one massive, beautiful big idea about the character of the God we serve:
The Big Idea
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Do you see it?

- God’s Patience is Astounding: We calculated the math! God waited over 700 years from the time He gave Moses the Law until the time judgment finally fell on Israel. He is not short-tempered; He is incredibly slow to anger.
- We Resemble What We Revere: The text notes that Israel went after false idols and became false. It is a law of human nature that we become like whatever we choose to worship. When we worship the living God, His Spirit transforms us into the image of Jesus.
- The Ultimate Grace: Israel got what they deserved death and exile. The truth is, we deserve that separation too. But on the cross, Jesus took what we deserved so that He could give us His unfailing grace.

1. Icebreaker & Hook
Discussion Question:
What is something you own or a process you deal with where you have to exercise an immense amount of patience? How do you typically react when your patience runs thin?
2. Digging Into the Text
Read 2 Kings 17:6-15 aloud as a group.
- The Anatomy of a Collapse: According to verses 7-12, what were the specific root issues behind Israel’s fall? Notice the progression from secret sins to open idolatry. How does small, compromised step-by-step disobedience lead to systemic spiritual collapse?
- Refusing the Warnings: Verse 13 explicitly highlights that the Lord warned them consistently through every single prophet and seer. When you realize this patient warning system spanned over 700 years (from Sinai to the fall of Samaria), what does that tell you about God’s heart toward rebels?
- Becoming False: Verse 15 contains a striking phrase: “They went after false idols and became false.” In what practical ways do we see people today morphing to resemble the things they value, trust, or worship instead of God?
3. Personal Application
- Evaluating Our Worship: If human nature dictating that “we resemble what we revere” is true, take a look at your life over the past month. What do your thoughts, calendar, and anxieties suggest you are actively revering? Are those things making you true or making you false?
- Responding to the “Slow to Anger” God: It can be easy to abuse God’s patience by treating it as permission to keep sinning. Where are you currently dragging your feet or being stubborn in an area where God has clearly spoken or warned you? What does repentance look like for you this week?
4. Prayer Focus
Close your time together by praying intentionally through these areas:
- Thank God for His immense, centuries-long patience in your own story and for sending Jesus to absorb the exact judgment our unfaithfulness deserved.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to root out any stubbornness, pride, or hidden idols, forming your heart instead into a clear reflection of Jesus Christ.
