This week at Lifepoint Church, we continued our series in 1 & 2 Kings by examining one of the most famous confrontations in Scripture: Elijah on Mount Carmel. In a world full of cultural compromises, the message from 1 Kings 18 challenges us to drop our neutrality and face a defining reality: The LORD is the one true God. Are you His? Because He is our Creator and King, choosing to follow cultural “gods” isn’t just a difference of opinion—it is treason against the King.
Big Idea: The LORD is the one true God.
Corresponding Question: Are you His?
Key Scripture
“And Elijah came near to all the people and said, ‘How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.’ And the people did not answer him a word.” — 1 Kings 18:21
Three Postures in the Text
The narrative contrasts three distinct groups of people, challenging us to look at where our own loyalty lies:
- Obadiah (The Hidden Faithful): Operating under the nose of wicked King Ahab, Obadiah feared the LORD greatly. He risked his life, reputation, and power to hide 100 prophets of God in caves, sustaining them with bread and water.
- Application Question: Are you willing to risk your (life, reputation, happiness, security…) for God?
- The Prophets of Baal (The Sincerely Deceived): These 450 men were deeply sincere, passionate, and energetic—dancing, shouting, and even cutting themselves. Yet, their sincerity couldn’t awaken a false god. They were guilty of idolatry, deception, and leading people astray.
- Application Question: Have you fallen for the lie that your religion doesn’t matter as long as you’re sincere?
- Elijah (The Faithful Servant): Elijah didn’t need performance, frantic shouting, or self-harm. As a man who truly knew the LORD, he simply repaired the altar and prayed a quiet, confident prayer of faith. God responded by consuming the water-drenched sacrifice with fire.
- Application Question: How’s your prayer life? Who’s your one?
The Gospel Connection
While Elijah is a heroic figure, this story ultimately points us to someone greater. Jesus is our true and better Elijah. Elijah was sent to call a guilty people to repent and be saved. Jesus did that, but went even further. Jesus is also our true and better Obadiah, protecting and nourishing God’s people. Most beautifully, Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice. On Mount Carmel, the fire fell on the bull; on the cross, the fire of God’s holy wrath fell on Jesus instead of falling on guilty people like us.
Lifegroup Leader Guide
Series: 1-2 Kings
Passage: 1 Kings 18:1-4, 17-29, 36-40
The Big Idea: The LORD is the one true God.
Sermon Question: Are you His?
Icebreaker Question
- What is an area of your life where you find it incredibly hard to make a definitive decision (e.g., picking a restaurant, choosing a movie, buying a car)? How does it feel to “limp” between choices?
Looking at the Text
- Read 1 Kings 18:1-4 and 17-19. Contrast the characters of Ahab and Obadiah. Obadiah held a high position of power under a wicked king but “feared the Lord greatly.” What did Obadiah risk by hiding the prophets?
*Leader Note: He risked his life, his high-status job, his safety, and his reputation.* - Read 1 Kings 18:21-29. Elijah confronts the people about “limping between two opinions.”
- How do the prophets of Baal demonstrate their devotion?
- Why is it dangerous to believe the cultural lie that “it doesn’t matter what you believe, as long as you are sincere and passionate about it”?
- Read 1 Kings 18:36-40. Look closely at Elijah’s prayer in verses 36-37. What is his primary goal in asking God to answer by fire? How does his prayer contrast with the chaotic performance of Baal’s prophets?
Gospel & Application
- In the sermon, we saw that Jesus is “better” than the figures in this story:
- He is a better Elijah (sent to save a guilty people).
- He is a better Obadiah (perfectly protecting and nourishing us).
- He is the ultimate Sacrifice (the fire of judgment fell on Him instead of us).
- The Ultimate Question: This week, our corresponding sermon question was: Are you His?
- Where in your life right now are you trying to stay “neutral” instead of fully aligning with King Jesus?
- How does your current prayer life reflect whether you truly know and belong to the LORD?
